Institute of Instrument Science and Technology (I2ST) insists on moral composition and talents cultivation, and is devoted to serving national mission. Sticking to the frontier science and technology, the Institute is oriented towards critical projects, national defense construction, major challenges in the industry and people's life and health. We carry forward the Tsinghua spirit of “action speaks louder than words”, to improve innovation ability, promote the instrument discipline to closely integrate with economic and social development, which has laid an important foundation for I2ST to become one of the top disciplines in the world with 90 years of experience.
The discipline of Instrument in Tsinghua University, which is mainly based on the I2ST, has been forging ahead, reforming with determination, and keeping improving. It is the first to establish a doctoral program of the precision instrument and mechanical engineering discipline in China, the first to set up the instrumentation post-doctoral station, and the first to win the right to grant doctorate degrees of instrument science and technology. It has been ranked first in the national subject assessment for many times. At present, it is the national "Double First-Class" key construction discipline, the national A+ discipline of Instrument Science and Technology, and the national firstclass undergraduate specialty construction station.
The institute has three national scientific research platforms: State key laboratory of precision measurement technology and instrument (awarded as A for three consecutive times, jointly built), Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center, and National Engineering Laboratory for
Multi-dimensional Identification and Trusted Authentication Technology (jointly built); and four national teaching platforms, including National Mechanical Engineering Teaching Demonstration Center, Modern Measurement and Control Technology Experimental Teaching Center, and Engineering Practice Education Center; as well as 7 provincial and ministerial level teaching and research platforms such as Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, Beijing Laboratory and so on.
Aiming at the development of national science and technology innovation, the Institute focuses on the research directions including Smart Micro Systems Technology and Application, Brain-inspired Computing, Engineering of Intelligent Sensing, Biomedical Instrumentation and Applications, Space-time and Standards Technology, Intelligent Control and Unmanned Systems, and Micro-nano Technology for Measurement & Control and Health Monitoring etc. It highlights
the characteristics of interdisciplinary integration of mechanics, optics, electrics, computing, measurement, control and biology, focusing on industry requirements, leading the forefront of disciplines, tackling major challenges, serving the construction of national defense, and solving key technical problems in the development of society, economy and people's livelihood.
