A total of 3,766 master’s and doctoral candidates received their degrees in the annual graduate student commencement July 13.

During the ceremony, held in the gymnasium, Ph.D.s were awarded to 416 students, while 3,350 students received master’s degrees.

Tsinghua President and Chairman of the Degree Conferral Committee Gu Binglin, together with other university leaders, presented degrees and certificates to the new graduates.

In his commencement address, President Gu congratulated the graduates and commended them for their hard work and contribution to the development of Tsinghua. He said there are more and more research areas in which the postgraduate students play an important role, and noted that more than 50 percent of the total papers collected by SCI list Tsinghua students as primary authors. 

He offered a few suggestions to the graduates to remember in their post-university life: have the courage to shoulder responsibilities; try to adapt to society after leaving school; and be optimistic, tolerant and open-minded. 

Concluding his speech, President Gu said he hoped the students would always bear in mind Tsinghua’s mottos of “Self-discipline and Social Commitment” and “Actions Speak Louder Than Words.”
